Types of Credit Cards (Part 2)

Friday, March 30th, 2007

One type of credit card that will surely suit a compassionate heart is the charitable credit card.  This idea behind this type of credit card is to give back to the community.  Your contribution is more specific – you take out a credit card that is linked to a specific charity and whenever you use your card, a certain amount is given to that group.  The specifics of the contribution depend on the credit card company and their charity program.

Store cards are another type of credit card.  These cards have a more specific use, however.  For example, you get a store card from Debenhams.  You can use this card to make purchases at the store without using cash.  It works the same way as other credit cards – you have to pay off your balance in a specific period of time with the added bonus of getting discounts.  The thing with store cards is that the interest rates are quite high.  If you do not pay off the balance in full, the discount that you got would be offset greatly by the interest rate.

Prepaid credit cards are becoming quite popular these days.  Perhaps one main reason is the concern over credit card debt and Internet fraud.  The idea behind this type of card is that you have to put in a certain amount of money into the card.  You can only use the card up to that amount.  Once it is spent, you have to put money in again.

So before taking out a credit card, why not look into the different possibilities and see which type suits you best?
