Travel season is almost here and we all know what that means – expenses here and there. If you are planning on going on a trip this summer, why don’t you plan more comprehensively in order to save up on your travel expenses? After all, with the increasing prices of most good and services today, it would bring you nothing but benefits if you take a little extra care in planning for your vacation. So how can you slash those travel fees that inevitably arise?
Plan with regard to your airplane travel.
More likely than not, you are going to take an airplane to your destination. After all, it is the easiest and fastest route to most destinations, not to mention the ONLY possible route to some many other countries outside of the UK. There is no avoiding airfare, taxes, fuel charges, and all those other charges that come with your plane ticket. But one thing that you can do is check out budget airlines and the periods that they come out with promos. This is what I normally do. Most of the time, I book tickets months in advance in order to avail of specific promos which cut down airfare prices in half!
Another thing that you should look into is the baggage policy of the airline. If you are going on a week-long trip (or longer) you might be bringing more than 1 bag with you. I suggest traveling light and bringing only one check-in luggage on top of your carry on luggage. This is because most airlines charge a hefty fee for an extra bag. You just might be surprised at how easy it is to pack light!
Plan with regard to your accommodations.
Some people like the sense of adventure that comes with their vacation. They only book their airfare and then decide on the accommodations when they get to their destination. Though this has worked for me sometimes – looking for a hostel or hotel when I get to the place – I have found out the hard way that it is almost always cheaper to book hotel rooms on the Internet. There are many online hotel booking sites that offer rooms at 30% to 50% off the published rate. Also, you have to book your room/s in advance. I remember one time in Thailand, I had to extend my stay at the hotel and I tried to do it over the Internet but they required 3 days of advance booking. What happened was that I had to pay the regular rates, which were considerably more expensive!
You should also look into the hotel’s policies before booking. What are their rules when it comes to early and late check in? Are you going to have problems with these times because of your flight? Do you need to check out on your last day but leave some luggage for keeping while you wait for a late night flight? If so, check with the hotel first if they charge any fees for holding your baggage.
