A lot of people realise the need to save. You hear it every day. We have to save. We have to be more frugal. And so on. Then again, saying something is different from actually doing it. With the way things are going, however, it might be easier to get people to actually do something about saving these days. If you think that you are ready to really start making some savings, then read on. Here are some baby steps you can take towards smarter personal finance management.
Turn of the telly
How often do you watch the telly? If you are like the average Briton, you probably spend a considerable time in front of that black box. But is it really necessary? Think about it, if you cut back on your watching time, you can cut back on electricity. In the long run, that translates to savings. In addition to this, you can avoid seeing those adverts that might entice you to spend more on food, clothes, and whatnot.
Evaluate your collections
Do you consider yourself a collector of something? Some people may have a penchant for collecting a certain kind of item. I have a friend who has been collecting hats for a long time. Another friend collects beer and liquor. I have nothing against these things – they are hobbies. However, if you feel that you cannot keep up with the collecting for now, then don’t push it. There is no rule that you have to keep collecting. Also, maybe it has become a habit for you more than a real passion. If so, then it might be time to stop and save some money!
Ever heard of the 30-day rule?
This rule works like this. If you want to buy something – take note that it is want and not need – why not wait for 30 days before you actually buy it? This can make you a LOT of savings if you do not really need this thing. For one, waiting will give you more time to think about it. It will also give you more time to see if you can actually afford it. At the end of the day, if you can do without the item and you cannot really afford it, waiting 30 days could help you control your urges.
Have house parties instead of going out
If you are a social creature and you spend a lot of your time out of the house, especially at night, why not try an alternative? Instead of going out all the time to bars and pubs, why not hold your own evening parties at home? You can alternate with your friends who are also trying to save some money. This week, you could host it. The next week, they can be the hosts. And so on. Just imagine how much you can save if you buy your beer from the store and not the pub – not to mention if you make mixed drinks.
