Secrets To Saving On Heating

Tuesday, October 28th, 2008

The winter is almost here. In fact, in some areas, it is cooling down a bit early. Blame global warming, blame whatever you want but the fact is that we have to make sure that we have adequate heating in our homes. Otherwise, it would cause an unending string of problems when winter arrives.

One of the most important considerations when we work on our home’s heating is the cost. This is especially true if you use oil for your heating needs. With the prices of petrol double what they were before, you can expect your heating costs to increase by as much as well! Though there is some good news in this respect – the price of crude oil dropped considerably yesterday – it would still be prudent to make some savings in as many ways as you can with regard to heating. Here are some tips to help you out.

Shop around for a programmable thermostat.
You might be thinking that now is not the time to be spending more money and you are right. However, there are some kinds of expenses that are necessary in order to save more money in the long run – and a programmable thermostat is one of them. Think about it, what do you do when you have to be out of the house all day? You might actually leave your heating on so that the house wouldn’t freeze over. However, if there is no one at home, this would be wasteful. Then again, you cannot leave the house to freeze, right? A programmable thermostat would actually provide a happy medium – you can set the temperature to the bare minimum that you need while everyone is out. When you come in, then you can adjust the temperature to a more comfortable setting. You will definitely save a lot on this.

Do whatever repairs and maintenance work you need NOW.
It is not officially winter yet but it would be good to have your heating system checked as early as possible. Leave it too late and you might have to pay more for the service. It is pretty much self-explanatory – the nearer winter is, the more people will rush to have their heating systems serviced. The higher the demand, the higher the price. If I were you, I would do this as soon as I could and save money while I am at it.

Make use of fans to spread the heat out.
If you have ceiling fans, it would be perfect for you to set your temperature at a lower setting (thereby saving on heating costs) and merely using the ceiling fans to push warm air down towards you. You can do so by turning the fans on at a low setting. This way, even if the temperature setting of your heating system is not as high as you normally use it, you would still feel just as warm.

These are only some of the more practical things that you can do to lessen your heating costs this winter. Do you have any tips of your own?
